Licensed Alcohol & Drug Counselors

Two (2) positions available in the Lewiston and Auburn school districts providing substance abuse education, screening, assessment, counseling, and referral services. This is a federally funded project and may be your dream position: instead of billing expectations, you will be delivering evidence-based substance abuse prevention programming to middle school students and their parents, assessment and counseling to middle and high school students, while working with a great team.

Must have LADC licensure and experience delivering MET/CBT and working with adolescents. These are perfect positions for LADC licensed counselors with passion and experience working with middle and high school students! Competitive pay and benefits, summer hours less than school year.

JOB DESCRIPTION - FAMILY SERVICES - Alcohol & Drug Treatment Services LADC COUNSELOR
Home base is ____Auburn _____Lewiston ______. Additional locations may be assigned in order to meet contract objectives. This position may work at multiple locations in Lewiston and Auburn. Travel may occur during the work day. General agency hours are between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday. This position must be flexible to accommodate the needs of clients and contractual obligations, and will include hours coordinating with the various school districts. This position is generally 40 hours per week, school year, and 20 hours during the summer. (Critical function of position): This professional position is exempt from overtime requirements.
STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position is grant funded through the Lewiston Public School’s Safe Schools/Healthy Students (SS/HS) program. Community Concepts has a 16 month contract ending 6/30/2011 and the opportunity for 2 additional years (through 6/30/2013). The LADC (Licensed Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselor) counselor provides evidence based substance abuse prevention services, and individual, family and group counseling services in a school based setting utilizing the 12 Core Functions of substance abuse counseling. This licensed position must adhere to the highest professional standards.
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
ASSISTS CUSTOMERS TO FREE FROM ALCOHOL AND DRUG ABUSE by providing individual, family and group substance abuse counseling by:

Aggressively marketing the program in order to encourage referrals including pro-active strategies including NIATx process improvement that will result in meeting contract obligations; working with Department Director to ensure that counseling time is efficiently and effectively deployed within Community Concepts’ service area;

Screening referrals for appropriateness and eligibility and the extent of any co-occurring conditions;

Conducting comprehensive assessments for those students who may be using alcohol or other drugs; referring parents and other family members to community resources;

Assessing and referring during crisis situations; making necessary recommendations and referrals based on assessments;

Developing individualized treatment plans utilizing co-occurring competencies;

Providing individual, group and family counseling by using motivational enhancement and cognitive behavioral approaches per program standards that can include standardized treatment curricula;

Developing and implementing treatment plan updates, after care plans, closing summaries;

Documenting according to program standards;

Critical function of job: Client charts and reports are to be completed per agency protocols with particular attention to accuracy and timeliness.
MEET THE REQUIRMENTS OF THE FUNDING SOURCE by:

Providing substance abuse screening, assessment and counseling as identified in this job description, Maine licensing standards and agency Policies & Procedures;

Participating in the Families in Action Program (FIA) training;

Become an active participant in the FIA school teams;

Facilitate the FIA program;

Work collaboratively with SBHC personnel, school personnel, school counselors, Lewiston’s Substance Abuse Prevention Coordinator, and other social service providers;

Work collaboratively with the SS/HS evaluator to collect data on the FIA program and substance abuse GPRA/indicators;

Connect students/families to DHHS to apply for medical insurance and assist with applications when needed. Provide services to students and their families irregardless of their ability to pay.

Offer supportive services to families in order that they may participate in the educational, social and healthy development of their children.

Participate in professional development SS/HS trainings and activities, SAP Advisory Council meetings, and substance abuse prevention activities.
ENSURES PROFESSIONALISM by reporting to clinical supervisor on customer progress via individual and group supervision, reporting regularly to program supervisor, maintaining professional credentials and substance abuse counseling code of ethics; demonstrating professional conduct with program staff, clients, school personnel, referral sources and community members.
ENSURES PROGRAM MEETS AND EXCEEDS LICENSING STANDARDS by documenting effectively and legibly, meeting requirements of Policy and Procedures Manual, including records of screening calls and up-to-date case records, follow-up, and outcomes; maintaining an up-to-date list of program participants and waiting list; completing disengagement summaries and maintaining file records of disengaged customers; completing billing forms. Also, maintaining educational/training attendance and records.
UTILIZES NETWORKING TECHNIQUES by developing and maintaining highly professional relationships with agencies and organizations.
MEETS AGENCY CONFIDENTIALITY STANDARDS by maintaining client information in strictest confidence and ensuring appropriate release forms are utilized.
CONTRIBUTES TO TEAM EFFORT by assisting the Supervisor as required including participating in the ongoing efforts to increase the quality and efficacy of the program, participating as a member of the agency and continually seeking to enhance its mission and vision.
ENSURES PROFESSIONAL CUSTOMER SERVICES by competently dealing with customers in a courteous and respectful manner, promptly following up on questions, providing business-like replies to inquiries and requests, by maintaining standards of exemplary professional conduct.
MAINTAINS PROFESSIONAL AND TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE by attending clinical supervision meetings and training required to maintain and expand high performance.
SUPPORTS AGENCY by participating in agency-wide activities; fostering a spirit of cooperation.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience:
License Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor license (LADC), minimum Bachelor of Science Degree in counseling, human services, nursing, social work or related area and a minor in substance abuse (or substance abuse certificate). Experience as a substance abuse counselor utilizing motivational enhancement therapy (MET) cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT); individual, group and family counseling skills. A willingness to utilize co-occurring strategies is required.
Other Skills and Aptitudes:
A willingness to accept the challenge of a progressive human service organization working within a school setting, working with people in who may be using and abusing substances; must possess a tolerance for nontraditional lifestyles and empathy for children and adolescents, low income families, those in domestic violence situations, people from non-dominant cultures, people involved in the criminal justice system. Ability to work with a minimum of supervision; keep neat, accurate records via computer word processing and adapt to evolving State and Federal regulations. Must have objectivity, flexibility, understanding,
empathy, patience, perseverance, and highest regard for professional ethics. Must have a valid Maine driver’s license and automobile with liability insurance. Must pass DHS and SBI background checks upon hire.

Physical Requirements:

Sedentary work: exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

Lifting: raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Repetitive motions: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

Visual acuity: the worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; expansive reading; visual inspection involving typographical errors.

Working conditions: the worker is subject to inside environmental conditions: Protection from weather but not necessarily from temperature changes. Otherwise normal office conditions.
