MAINE ASSOCIATION of
SUBSTANCE ABUSE PROGRAMS

The Maine Behavioral Health Foundation (MeBHF)

The Maine Behavioral Health Foundation, formerly called the Maine Substance Abuse Foundation (MeSAF), is a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization incorporated in 2003 to serve as a catalyst for building a more caring, creative and effective approach to the problems associated with addictions and mental illness. The Foundation's primary purpose is to enhance the quality of life in Maine through the philanthropic support of the program initiatives of the Maine Association of Substance Abuse Programs (MASAP) and the Maine Association of Mental Health Services (MAMHS).

We envision a foundation that stimulates the conscience of the community and fosters a commitment to reduce and eliminate the personal, social and economic harm caused by behavioral health issues. The Maine Association of Substance Abuse Programs (MASAP) and the Maine Association of Mental Health (MAMHS) are each ommitted to excellence in behavioral health disease prevention, treatment, and recovery support for Maine individuals, families and communities.

To accomplish this, the Foundation carries out its purpose through professional stewardship and the granting of donated funds using a variety of strategies. We support training, education and research (excluding biomedical research) and projects that demonstrate the effective delivery of behavioral health services.

The Maine Behavioral Health Foundation is a not-for-profit organization. Your gift is tax-deductible to the extent the law allows.

Bequests and Planned Gifts

There are many creative and flexible ways to make a contribution to the Maine Behavioral Health Foundation. The tax laws may help you to accomplish multiple goals with your money. Just as donations are sometimes tax-deductible, bequests can sometimes reduce the taxes that may be levied against your estate.

Bequests to The Maine Behavioral Health Foundation may take many forms. You may arrange for the Foundation to receive:

  • A specific dollar amount
  • Specified assets
  • Retirement account assets, consisting of any benefits remaining in your retirement plan
  • A residuary bequest, in which the Foundation receives all or a percentage of the remainder of your estate after all other obligations are met
  • A contingent bequest, in which the Foundation becomes the beneficiary only if the named beneficiary is unable to accept the bequest.

In considering this type of bequest, you should consult with an attorney who is knowledgeable about estate planning and who is familiar with the laws of the state where you reside. The following sample paragraph may be helpful to your attorney:

I bequeath to the Maine Behavioral Health Foundation, a not-for-profit organization chartered under the laws of the State of Maine , located at 295 Water Street Suite 200, in Augusta, ME, the sum of $____________ (or ____% of my residuary estate) to be used for unrestricted general purposes.

Please Note: This is general information and is not presented as specific legal or tax advice. Donors should, therefore, consult with their personal advisors.
